Bio

Ann-Lee and Gordon Switzer are the authors of Gateway to Promise: Canada’s First Japanese Community, and Sakura in Stone: Victoria’s Japanese Legacy. A husband and wife historian team, they became interested in the prewar Japanese Canadian community in Victoria after becoming involved in the local Japanese Canadian community and being asked to write about the people of Japanese descent buried in Victoria’s Ross Bay Cemetery by the Old Cemeteries Society. Upon finding that there was not a comprehensive published source about the prewar Japanese Canadian community in Victoria, they set out to write it themselves with the help of its former residents. Both Ann-Lee and Gordon have published other books on historical topics and are active in the Victoria historical community.
