Marlene was born in Toronto and moved to Vancouver Island in 1996. Since then she has lived in and has exhibited her artwork in Khartoum, Sudan, New York City, and Phnom Penh, Cambodia before settling in Victoria, BC. Her artistic development is a result of the influential instructors at the Art Student League of New York, and artists in British Columbia.  Visual experiences are her inspiration, so she generally works from photographs, using various techniques, and experimenting with medium choices such as graphite, charcoal/watercolour/pastels, acrylic and Kroma Crackle.

Marlene has organized and exhibited in two spring Art Shows held at the Royal Colwood Golf Club in support of Soroptimist International of Greater Victoria in the spring of 2017, 2018 and the upcoming 2019 THE ARTISAN SHOW in October.

From January 12 to March 31, 2019 Marlene is at the Maritime Museum of BC, solo artist for the “The Lost Fleet” Exhibition.

Artist Statement

The invitation to be the artist in resident for the "Lost Fleet" Exhibition at the Maritime Museum of BC in early 2019 provided me the opportunity to explore, research and learn about the hardships our Japanese Canadian fishermen and their families endured. Inspiration for my art is found everywhere, near and far. Having the opportunity to live abroad has expanded the art subjects used in many of my previous works. I work from my photos in graphite, pastel, charcoal, watercolour, and acrylic, and have discovered an exciting mix of watercolour/charcoal/pastel, and, Acrylic/Kromo Crackle
