Kathryn Hatashita-Lee was born in Toronto and raised in Vancouver. She studied for a B.A. in History at the University of British Columbia, where she worked for several years before marrying Roger Lee. A SEAD grant from The National Association of Japanese Canadians helped finance her second year at the Emily Carr College of Art & Design. In 1999, the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop selected Kathryn’s story, “Remember, Chrysanthemum,” as the winning entry for the Emerging Writer, Children’s Fiction category. This story centres on a Canadian girl of mixed English and Japanese descent, who listens to her Grandma Tanaka’s account of the Japanese Canadian evacuation. “Remember, Chrysanthemum” was published in Winds Through Time: An Anthology of Canadian Historical Young Adult Fiction (Beach Holme Publishing) and reprinted in Crossroads 7 (Gage Educational Publishing).
