Bio

Mia Hope (b. 2001) is an emerging interdisciplinary artist, photographer, writer and performer based on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As a biracial Japanese-Canadian, she takes on a cross-cultural and feminist framework in her studies and craft. She is interested in cultural liberation, inclusivity and diversity for those underrepresented in the arts community. She primarily expresses herself through movement, visual art and textile work. Her creative process is often informed by nostalgia, cultural discourse and feminine identity. In her youth, she engaged in Taiko drumming and performed in the Ganbare Japan Charity Concert in 2011. She continues to engage in the performing arts through dance and movement-based practices. Mia is interested in curatorial practices and concepts both within and outside the gallery space and continues to explore ways in which artists creatively exchange and collaborate across disciplines and cultures. Mia expects to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in the Art, Performance & Cinema Studies Program at Simon Fraser University in 2023 and plans to gain industry experience in Tokyo, Japan following graduation.
